Dulwich House – London, UK

A bit about the project

We interpreted this as a challenge to figure out how to incorporate plants into the house and make the most obvious transition between the interior and exterior landscaping. Deep planted beds are used for internal planting, and a giant bamboo that stretches from the ground to the first floor is housed in a double-height area in the living area. The exposed steel frame serves as a framework for long-term attachment and growth of plants.

To adhere to local design restrictions, the house’s size, proportions, and materiality must be highly considerate of the homes that surround it. Plants are encouraged to climb the neutral palette created by the combination of brick, clay tiles, and zinc.

Client Testimonial

A new build house in a leafy suburb of London, the project was designed around a comment by the client who said ‘I would not be adverse to having a tree inside my house’.
